SOUTH BRUCE, ON – The newly elected council for South Bruce was sworn into office on Tuesday, November 15th in the council chambers at the municipal office in Teeswater.
Newly elected Mayor Mark Goetz welcomed returning Councillors Mike Niesen, Mike McDonagh and Mark Ireland and introduced newly elected councillors Audrey Bross, Jeff Goetz and Nigel Van Dyk.
The ceremony began with a land acknowledgement in recognition of the traditional territory of Saugeen First Nation and the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation in which we gathered. Greg Plain then performed a smudging ceremony to promote positivity for the new council.
After the Mayor and Councillors were sworn in, Mayor Goetz gave an address speaking to the excitement of the group to promote unity and to approach challenges by rolling up their sleeves and meeting them head on.
Mayor Goetz said “The council needs to focus on what it is we need to do as a group, every day, with the DGR Project and with other projects within the community. We need to grow together, not as Formosa, Mildmay and Teeswater but united as South Bruce”
The first responsibility of the new council was to elect a Deputy Mayor. The council unanimously voted to elect Mike McDonagh as the Deputy Mayor of South Bruce.
The next meeting of council will take place on November 22nd at the municipal council chambers in Teeswater.

South Bruce is one of two remaining communities that the Nuclear Waste Management Organization is considering for the site of a deep geological repository for Canada’s used nuclear fuel, a Centre of Expertise and many supporting facilities. The Municipality of South Bruce is working towards an informed decision for the community through the South Bruce Nuclear Exploration Project team, the Community Liaison Committee, and independent reviews to determine if the site is safe for people and the environment, offers positive benefits and if the community is willing to host the site.
