Ten Local Youth Students Awarded South Bruce Bursary
SOUTH BRUCE, ON – The Municipality of South Bruce and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has announced that ten local post-secondary students were selected as the 2022 recipients of the South Bruce Student Bursary, from NWMO’s Early Investments in Education and Skills (EIES) Program. Each student received $1,000 to support their continued education.
Applicants were asked to submit a brief essay giving their opinions on whether organizations and schools have a responsibility to educate today’s youth about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) and trades opportunities. Students were also asked to provide their insight on STEAM or trades opportunities the Municipality of South Bruce could offer to help South Bruce youth.
Representatives from the Community Liaison Committee (CLC), staff from the Municipality of South Bruce, and the NWMO reviewed the applications. After receiving an influx of high-quality applications from South Bruce students, the CLC decided to double the number of bursaries awarded this year to 10.
The ten bursary recipients across the Municipality demonstrated their keen insight, ambitious goals and their motivated commitment to make South Bruce a better place to live through community involvement.
“We are happy to provide support for young leaders in our community to pursue further education” said CLC Chair Jim Gowland
The EIES program exists for capacity building and development purposes in communities that have ongoing participation in the site selection process for the Project to store Canada’s used nuclear fuel. It provides investment in education and training for youth in our community.

South Bruce is one of two remaining communities that the Nuclear Waste Management Organization is considering for the site of a deep geological repository for Canada’s used nuclear fuel, a Centre of Expertise and many supporting facilities. The Municipality of South Bruce is working towards an informed decision for the community through the South Bruce Nuclear Exploration Project team, the Community Liaison Committee, and independent reviews to determine if the site is safe for people and the environment, offers positive benefits and if the community is willing to host the site.
