Today, the Municipality of South Bruce and Canadians across the country join together in donning an orange shirt to recognize the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
In acknowledgement of the past and present wrongdoings inflicted on Indigenous Canadian communities, notably the harms of the Residential School System, we must make efforts to learn from history and provide reconciliation in our communities.
The municipality and council take action in reconciliation by providing education and training for the community while promoting values of respect and understanding. We continue to seek guidance, reflect on our actions and promote cultural awareness in our efforts of reconciliation.
Land recognition is a way to honour the first inhabitants of this land, the Indigenous people of today and the aspirations they have for future generations. The Municipality of South Bruce shares a commitment to stewardship of the land and natural environment in this traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation.
The Municipality recognizes that this day may be particularly difficult for survivors of the residential school system and the families of those who’s lives were lost, and notes that support is available 24 hours a day through the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line, at 1-866- 925-4419.
