TEESWATER, ON—The vision of a modern, fully-equipped medical clinic for the community of Teeswater is well on its way to becoming a reality, due to the efforts of volunteers and the generous spirit of local residents, Council, and corporate sponsors.
A $519,000 contribution to support the development of the Teeswater Medical Centre was recently made through the Near-Term Investment program which the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has provided to the Municipality of South Bruce.
Near-Term Investment is a funding program available to the Municipality aimed at supporting social and physical infrastructure projects through 2020-2023. It is offered by the NWMO to communities that remain in the site selection process for the Project to store Canada’s used nuclear fuel.
In the Fall of 2021, Council made a Near-Term Investment funding request in support of the development of the Teeswater Medical Centre. It was then approved by the NWMO based on how it will meet sustainability, achievability, community benefit and other criteria.
Representatives from the NWMO, South Bruce Council, and the Teeswater Medical Centre Development Steering Committee gathered at the site of the future Centre on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate and acknowledge this major contribution.
“Our fundraising efforts are greatly enhanced by this major contribution from the NWMO’s Near-Term Investment program. On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank Council and the NWMO for helping us work toward achieving our goal of local health care in a state-of-the-art facility,” said Paul Cronin, Co-Chair of the Committee that is spearheading the work to establish the Centre in Teeswater.
“Council is proud to support the efforts to establish the Teeswater Medical Centre in a number of ways, including through the allocation of Near-Term Investment funding,” said Mayor Robert Buckle. “We appreciate that the NWMO shares in recognizing the importance of this project, and are key partners in ensuring it is a success.”
“We are pleased to support this important community-driven initiative,” said Lise Morton, Vice President of Site Selection at the NWMO. “The Teeswater Medical Centre will provide an important service for community well-being for years to come. Thank you to South Bruce Council and the committee volunteers working to make this Centre a reality.”
The contribution of just over half a million dollars offers significant support to the fundraising efforts of the Committee, which recently launched their community and corporate fundraising efforts. They will be engaging with the public, businesses and organizations in the months ahead to reach their target of $2.6M.
