Since 2012, the Municipality of South Bruce has been learning more about Canada’s plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel, which is the responsibility of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). The plan, named Adaptive Phased Management, requires the used fuel to be safely and securely contained and isolated from people and the environment in a deep geological repository in a suitable rock formation.
In May 2010, the NWMO published the Site Selection Process for identifying an informed and willing community to host the project. In January of 2012, the Municipality of South Bruce formally entered the Site Selection Process and is one of two communities continuing to explore this Project and in 2013 our first South Bruce Community Liaison Committee (CLC) meeting was held.
Since the first meeting, the Municipality and the Committee has been and continues to engage citizens in the entire South Bruce area to learn more about Adaptive Phased Management, particularly key aspects of the repository, in greater detail, as well as the opportunity to host the Centre of Expertise. This is accomplished through monthly meetings with educational speakers, open houses and community events.
There are currently vacancies on the Committee and South Bruce Council is seeking two interested individuals to fill the vacancy and participate on the Community Liaison Committee to facilitate community engagement and assist with activities and events related to the Site Selection Process. Applicants must be open-minded, unbiased, and willing to learn more while respecting diverse views of others.
Interested individuals should send a Letter of Interest to the South Bruce Community Liaison Committee Project Coordinator by Monday December 19th at Noon. The Letter of Interest should include a summary of skills and experiences that would be an asset to the Committee, the reasons for wishing to serve on the Committee, a summary of their current knowledge of the project, and what they hope to achieve as a Member of the Committee.
