South Bruce, ON – The Municipality of South Bruce hosted the South Bruce Nuclear Exploration Forum and exhibition at the Teeswater-Culross Community Centre on April 4 and 5, 2023.
The forum featured Canadian and international experts on topics related to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) Deep Geological Repository (DGR) project. It covered topics like safety, the environment, international experiences, workforce development, socio-economic impacts and more.
Attendees included local residents, local high schools, elected officials from neighbouring communities. Other interested stakeholders from across Canada also attended. The Forum was the latest initiative by the Municipality to share information about the Project with the community.
“As one of the two remaining sites in the site selection process for the DGR Project, the Municipality recognizes it’s important the community has continued opportunities to learn about the Project,” said CAO Leanne Martin.
Keynote speakers included Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO, and by Tom Isaacs, former Lead Advisor to the U.S. Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.
Over two days there were panel discussions and speaker presentations. There was also a free open house exhibition for people to drop in without registration from 4:00-6:30 PM on the first day of the event. An overview of the panel discussions and presentations are available here.
“It was great to get back together for an in-person event. There were many informative discussions, questions raised and important dialogue which is important for our community as we consider whether we want to host the NWMO Project. My thanks to all who took time to attend and participate in this event,” said Mayor Goetz.
The Municipality looks forward to hosting more engagement activities in the future to help residents make an informed decision about the proposed DGR project.
